Description
-Serves as highest level technical resource for a networking technology
-Works outside immediate discipline to coordinate a group of people in troubleshooting a wide-scale problem; serves as point-of-contact across several areas or disciplines to solve major network outages with high impact or visibility
-Provides expert technical advice and counsel to management and to less experienced infrastructure developers
-Evaluates, recommends and selects appropriate hardware and software for network infrastructure
-Performs lead role in reviewing vendor proposals and making recommendations
-Leads implementation and deployment efforts on large projects
-Designs and leads implementation of hardware/ software/ environment standards based on business strategy and architecture
1. FUNCTION (DEPARTMENT ROLE): Directs the planning, development, installation, testing, modification, and evaluation of all Wide Area Network (WANS) and related products. Is responsible for related network management and reporting. Monitors systems performance and performance tuning and understands/designs solutions that support distributed systems that integrate with the WANs. Is a key player in the development and implementation of domestic (or international) systems, with significant exposure to users and interfaces with all levels of management and outside vendors. Has a proven track record of managing diverse environments and resources in multiple projects through all life-cycle phases in accordance with established direction and standards, where maintaining a high level of user trust and confidence in the group’s knowledge of and concern for users’ business needs is paramount.
2. PURPOSE (END RESULTS):
• Design and implementation of the WAN architecture
• Produce service levels consistent with current business needs and future requirements
• Manage interface to database engineering (i.e., monitor systems performance and performance tuning) and understand/design solutions that support distributed databases and that integrate with the WAN.
• Develop strategic plans and identify key success factors; set priorities and allocate the resources to achieve unit, division, and corporate goals
• Ensure the control, reliability, performance, and security of all Wide Area Network environments.
• Establish standards and guidelines
• Research/assess available network technologies in relation to the enterprise’s current and future needs
• Compare costs, recommend/select specific products, and negotiate lease or purchase agreements as necessary
• Define, prioritize, schedule, and monitor multiple technical projects, developing and maintaining comprehensive project plans/schedules (and using same to provide senior management with accurate and complete status information)
• Advise senior IT management on the viability of using specific Wide Area Network devices and philosophies.
• Act as senior-level mentor to technical staff and experienced management
3. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience and training; Master’s degree is desirable
• Strong project management skills and experience managing remote locations
• Strong technical and nontechnical communication skills
• Ability to establish and maintain a high level of user trust and confidence in the group’s knowledge of and concern for users’ business needs
• A proven track record of managing diverse technical staff and resources in multiple projects through all life-cycle phases in accordance with established direction and standards
• Broad range of LAN/WAN/MPLS and desktop knowledge is desired, including from among the following:
- OS/applications
- Desktop
- Client/Server
- Network
- LAN/WAN/MPLS Management Suites
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
• Network certifications are highly desirable.
• Seven to ten years of related experience responsible for strategic planning, technical services for hardware/software engineering, and production support of the areas of responsibility listed above
• Experience in data communications, engineering, data communications hardware and software analysis, network administration and management.
